Applying for a Canada Student Visa (study permit) requires students to first enroll and receive acceptance from a Canadian educational institution. Alongside the Study Permit, students may require a Temporary Resident Visa and/or an eTA (electronic Travel Authorization), depending on their citizenship or residency.
Who is eligible for a Canadian Student Visa?
Foreign students accepted into a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) may apply for a Canada Student Visa to pursue their chosen program. A letter of acceptance from the designated institution is a prerequisite. Additionally, applicants must meet these criteria:
- Acceptance by a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.
- Demonstrated ability to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation.
- No criminal record, posing no risk to Canadian security, with possibly required police certificates.
- Good health, willingness to undergo medical examination if necessary.
- Assurance to leave Canada upon authorized stay completion.
Certain individuals do not require a study permit to attend school in Canada:
- Those enrolling in short-term courses or programs lasting six months or less.
- Family members of foreign representatives or armed forces members.
- Foreign nationals registered as Indians in Canada.
Extending a Student Visa or Changing Conditions:
To extend a stay as a student or alter permit conditions, applicants must submit relevant applications before permit expiry.
Restoring Status as a Student:
Students may apply to restore status within 90 days of its loss, provided they continue to meet initial entry and stay requirements.
Health Care:
Medical costs for foreign students are not covered by the Canadian government. Health insurance arrangements vary by province.
Work while Studying:
Full-time students may work on-campus or off-campus without a work permit, subject to certain conditions.
Bringing Family to Canada:
Spouses, common-law partners, and dependent children of students may accompany them to Canada. Spouses/partners receive Open Work Permits.
Post-Graduation Work Permit:
Upon completing an eligible program at a Canadian post-secondary institution, graduates may apply for a three-year open work permit under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program.
Canada Experience Class (CEC):
Foreign students completing studies in Canada and gaining work experience may apply for immigration under the Canadian Experience Class (CEC).
